Before I start babbling, I want to add that the pictures I've presented below were found on Comingsoon.net. They do not belong to me. Although, it would be pretty cool if they did.
Let's rewind to many years ago when the first Percy Jackson film was announced. It came on the heels of the release of the fifth book in the original series. I loved these books. They were the next series I explored after Harry Potter. At the time, I knew few people who also read them. This made them my little secret. It was a great time.
Well, fast forward to 2010 and you have Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The start of a new hit film series? Hardly. Every studio is looking for their next ace in the hole (read: Next Harry Potter). When they announced this, I thought "here it is." Sure, the first book had too many similarities and the overall series was a little close, but who cares? Harry Potter in a Greek setting? Hell yeah. They attached Chris Columbus to the film and made Olympus look like Hogwarts. I assumed they had decided to embrace the similarities of its fellow fantasy series.
It didn't bother me that they tried to distance themselves. They took every element that was similar (kids separated in to group houses, three headed dog, children out to stop Harry (I mean Percy...). They removed those elements, but then removed the whole reason for the characters to start out as children, which is the overall story arch for the ENTIRE SERIES. Okay, I won't go on because that could inspire several blog posts.
I personally am head over heels excited for the sequel The Sea of Monsters. I believe Fox (for once) see what they did to a potential cash cow:
